The Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls, which are made up of more than 1,000 coral islands. It is known for its beaches, blue lagoons and extensive reefs. The capital, Malé, has bustling fish markets, restaurants and shops on the main road, and is home to Hukuru Miskiy, a mosque carved from beautiful white coral. The customs and people of the Maldives were greatly influenced by Indians, Sri Lankans, North Africans, Arabs and Europeans traveling through the trade routes of the Indian Ocean. However, Maldivians developed their own language and unique cultural identity. In 2011, UNESCO designated an area comprised of 75 islands as the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve. This reserve supports approximately 250 species of coral and many other ocean life species.
In terms of tourism, the Maldives is one of the world’s safest travel destinations. Adventurous travelers can choose from flyboarding, free diving, jet skis, kayaking, kite surfing, parasailing, surfing, wakeboarding, water skiing, and underwater scooters. - The world’s first underwater cabinet meeting was held in the Maldives. In 2009, President Mohamed Nasheed, along with 13 government officials, strapped on their scuba gear and conducted their meeting at the bottom of the ocean. They did this to call attention to rising water levels on the islands and to raise awareness around their proposed sustainability projects.
- It is the lowest and flattest nation in the world! The ground level of the Maldives on an average is around 1.5 meters above sea level, that is just 4 feet 11 inches. The highest point in Maldives is on Villingili Island, which is only 2.3 meters above sea level or 7 feet 7 inches.
- The islands’ beautiful sand is white and extremely fine as it is coralline in origin and not made from quartz, as beach sand typically is. Representing less than five percent of the world’s beaches, coralline beaches are a rare find.
